Man Stabbed on Narragansett Grounds During Tribal Meeting

Andrew J. Smith was seriously injured in stabbing while annual meeting was taking place in RI

 Police say a 37-year-old man has been stabbed in the chest and seriously injured on Narragansett Tribal grounds during the tribe's annual meeting.

Andrew J. Smith, whose last known address was in South Kingstown, was taken to South County Hospital soon after the incident at about 10:30 p.m. Saturday. The Westerly Sun reports that he was transferred to Rhode Island Hospital's trauma center and was reported in fair condition Sunday morning.

Charlestown Police Lt. Patrick J. McMahon said Smith was stabbed in the chest during a fight.

He said police received numerous 911 calls on Saturday from attendees of the three-day meeting reporting disturbances.

The tribe's 339th annual meeting continued Sunday.
