19-Year-Old Charged in Fatal Brockton, Mass. Crash Faces Judge

Jesus Alvarez Coreano of Brockton entered the courtroom in a wheel chair, his leg propped up in a brace

A 19-year-old Brockton, Massachusetts, man facing charges for a fatal car crash last month that killed his 14-year-old passenger and fellow Brockton High a school student, faced a judge Friday morning.

Jesus Alvarez Coreano of Brockton entered the courtroom in a wheel chair, his leg propped up in a brace.

The family of the victim, 14-year-old Isaias Caban, sat in court wearing t-shirts with the boy's photo.

Investigators say Coreano was speeding when he lost control of the car and struck a tree on Summer Street last month. Caban, a passenger in the car, was killed.

Another 14-year-old passenger was seriously injured. All of the teens attended Brockton High School.

Witnesses told NBC Boston the driver was inconsolable after the crash, which killed Caban immediately.

Coreano is charged with one count each of motor vehicle homicide by negligent operation, operating to endanger and speeding.

He has no prior criminal record.

The judge released him on several conditions. He cannot drive and must stay away from victims' family. He must also wear a GPS monitoring bracelet and follow a curfew.

Families of both the victim and the suspect filled the courtroom. They did not want to comment after the arraignment.

Coreano is set to appear back in court in July for his pretrial hearing.
