2 Officers Struck by Car During Traffic Detail

Two Ipswich, Massachusetts, police officers were injured while working a traffic detail on Tuesday.

At 10:03 a.m., Officer David Harrell requested medical aid on Route 1A in the town of Hamilton, reporting that he and Officer Zachary Bird had been struck by a vehicle.

According to police, Officer Bird sustained serious injuries to his lower extremities and is being treated at Beverly Hospital. Officer Harrell was treated for minor injuries and released.

Initial investigation reveals both officers were standing on the side of the road when the crash occurred. The vehicle, which was being operated by a 23-year-old man from Salem, also struck the back of one of the officer's parked cruisers.

The Hamilton Police Department and Massachusetts State Police are investigating.
