Adult, 1-Year-Old Seriously Injured in I-93 Crash

State police confirm the route is being closed to accommodate the helicopter

A woman and a 1-year-old boy were seriously injured in a 4-vehicle crash on Interstate 93 north in Canton, Massachusetts, on Friday morning.

The accident occurred around 10:30 a.m. and involved multiple vehicles. Massachusetts State Police said it was a chain-reaction crash involving a series of rear-end collisions, and the car the woman and boy were in was crushed in the middle of a tractor-trailer unit, a van and a pickup truck.

I-93 was temporarily closed in both directions to accommodate the helicopter. As of 11:30 a.m., all southbound lanes had reopened and two northbound lanes were open to traffic.

Police said the boy was taken by ambulance to South Shore Hospital in Weymouth, and from there is being taken to Children's Hospital in Boston. A state trooper drove the ambulance to the hospital so both EMTs could be free to administer to the child.

The woman was transported by medical helicopter to Brigham and Women's Hospital in Brighton.

Police said the victims suffered serious, but not life-threatening injuries. The cause of the crash remains under investigation, and police said it is too soon to say if any charges may be forthcoming.
