Almost 130K Lose Power in R.I., Mass.

A line of powerful thunderstorms have moved through portions of southern New England and utilities are reporting nearly 130,000 customers without power.

The storms impacted Rhode Island, southeastern Massachusetts and Cape Cod Tuesday morning. The National Weather Service had warned of potentially destructive wind gusts in excess of 70 mph along with severe lightning.

As of 8 a.m., National Grid was reporting more than 106,000 customers without power in Rhode Island, most of them in Providence and Kent Counties.

National Grid also reported more than 11,000 Massachusetts customers in the dark. Eversource was reporting more than 12,800 outages, many of them on Cape Cod.

A severe thunderstorm warning was also issued for portions of Essex County in northeastern Massachusetts.

The storms were expected to move offshore later Tuesday morning.
