120 Washed-Up Sea Turtles Recovered Along Cape Cod Bay

Volunteers with the Massachusetts Audubon Society retrieved approximately 120 "cold-stunned" sea turtles this weekend that washed up along the shores of Cape Cod Bay.

The Boston Globe reports a majority of the turtles recovered on the beaches of Wellfleet, Truro, Eastham and Brewster were Kemp's ridley sea turtles - an endangered species and the rarest type of sea turtle.

Officials say this is an unusually large late-season stranding for the turtles, which are generally found stranded around Thanksgiving as they make their way south.

Wildlife officials say most of the turtles would've been dead if it was any other year. They survived because of the unseasonably warm temperatures in the region.

The surviving turtles were taken to New England Aquarium's animal care facility in Quincy for treatment.
