Baker Heading to D.C. to Push Massachusetts' Bid for Snow Disaster Relief

Massachusetts Gov. Charlie Baker plans to attend meetings in Washington on the state's bid for disaster relief.

The governor is scheduled to meet on Monday with Beth Zimmerman, associate administrator of the Federal Emergency Management Agency, and later with Vice President Joe Biden at the White House.

Citing an "unprecedented and disastrous pattern of severe winter weather," Baker last month asked President Barack Obama to declare a disaster in 10 Massachusetts counties. Such a declaration could make the state eligible for up to 75 percent reimbursement for an estimated $400 million in snow removal and other costs.

In filing the request, the governor asked that the string of storms that pummeled the state with record-setting snowfall in January and February be treated as a single disaster, compounded by frigid temperatures.
