Massachusetts Gov. Charlie Baker is ready to name a new board to oversee the troubled Boston-area transit system.
Baker plans to sign into law Friday a $38.1 billion state budget that includes a provision creating a five-member financial control board to supervise the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority for three years.
During his monthly segment Thursday on WGBH-FM, Baker said he would also name the members of the control board Friday. He proposed the new board after a winter of massive breakdowns on the MBTA.
The budget for the fiscal year that started July 1 also gives the T a temporary exemption from the state's anti-privatization rules, commonly known as the Pacheco Law.
But the Legislature did not include other proposals, such as giving the control board more flexibility on setting fares.
