The City Council in Boston has voted to end the city's ban on allowing patrons to bring their own beer or wine into restaurants that do not have liquor licenses.

The Boston Globe reports Wednesday's unanimous vote would allow the city to issue a BYOB license, but with several restrictions. It would apply only to restaurants that have 30 or fewer seats and are located in outlying neighborhoods such as South Boston, Roxbury, Hyde Park and Dorchester.

The measure must be signed by Mayor Marty Walsh, who says he's open to the idea. The Boston Licensing Board would then establish regulations, including how much liquor could be brought into restaurants.

The council is recommending that each patron be limited to one six-pack of beer or one bottle of wine.
