A 12-year-old boy who fell through the ice in a Brockton pond last month is dead after weeks in the hospital, Brockton Superintendent Kathleen Smith confirms.
"It is with deep and heartfelt sadness that I inform you of the death of Charles "CJ" Thompson, our grade six student at Plouffe Academy," Principal Michelle Nessralla wrote in an email to staff in an email obtained by The Brockton Enterprise. "Charles died earlier today (Monday); the cause of his death was injuries suffered from falling through the ice on a pond on January 9th."
"We would like to thank our family, friends, community and even complete strangers for the outpouring of love and support you have provided to our family over the past month," a statement later provided by the family read. "We are heartbroken to share the sad news that CJ passed away yesterday. We ask you to respect our privacy during this difficult time, so that we may grieve."
Police told the Globe last month that Thompson and a nine-year-old boy may have walked on the ice as a dare. The boys were pulled from the water after other friends flagged down passing motorists.
The Enterprise reports Thompson was in a coma when he died in Boston Monday night.
