Celebrating Boston's Building Boom

Real estate experts estimate somewhere around $7 billion worth of construction is underway right now in the city of Boston.

Thursday was a day of celebrating two major projects that by themselves account for more than $1 billion of that total.

In Brighton, New Balance Athletics unveiled its dramatic new 250,000-square-foot headquarters next to the Massachusetts Turnpike Extension, built in a shape some see as a shoe, others a ship -- but surely, when you go inside, it is a showcase for shoes, shoes, and more shoes. New Balance uses the lobby to show the history and evolution of what has become a $3-billion-a-year global sports giant.

Still to come next year are a 10-story office building with an adjacent Boston Bruins practice facility, and a new commuter rail station New Balance is adding on the MBTA Framingham/Worcester commuter rail line.

Down in the heart of downtown at 1 Franklin Street was a celebration to mark the pouring of the final, 60th floor of the Millennium Tower residences, a $700 million dollar project that will include a $37.5 million penthouse condo. As crews reach to the sky with steel and concrete, down below, they're rapidly finishing off floors and painting, carpeting, and punch-listing units.

Millennium partner Richard Baumert told necn's Greg Wayland the construction site could be welcoming residents by next summer.

"We're only ten months away, so we'll be welcoming our first residents in sometime in July," Baumert said.

Only about 40 of the 442 units planned in the building remain unsold, and those purchased so far have gone for anywhere from $900,000 for a one-bedroom unit to $10 million for an upper-floor penthouse.
