Chelsea, Mass. Woman Hurt in Drive-By Shooting

A woman was hospitalized late Monday after she was injured in a drive-by shooting in Chelsea, Massachusetts, according to police.

Officials responded to a call of a shooting at 11:50 p.m. near Clark Avenue. At the scene, they found the 42-year-old victim suffering from two gunshot wounds and rushed her to the hospital.

"I thought it was only fireworks. And then when I looked outside, it was my friend but I didn’t know something happened to her," said neighbor Omayra Gonzalez.

Neighbors say the woman was seated on her porch when a vehicle pulled up to her home and opened fire. She was struck in the chest and left forearm, according to Chelsea police.

"A lot of people say that one of the cars came by and they stopped over here in front and they started just shooting out of nowhere," neighbor Erick Deblas said. "I guess she was the only one outside and I guess she was shot."

The victim's family said she was released from surgery at approximately 4 a.m. and remains in critical but stable condition at Massachusetts General Hospital.

A detailed description of the gunman was not immediately available. The vehicle used in the shooting is described as a gray, newer model Honda with four doors and tinted windows.

Officials were investigating the scene for nearly five hours, paying close attention to a yellow triple-decker home. The home’s porch was pierced several times with bullets.

Chelsea police said they do not believe the shooting was a random attack. However, they are continuing their investigation. Anyone with information on the shooting should call the Chelsea Police Department at 617-466-4800.
