Chism Lawyers Appeal Release of Police Interrogation

Lawyers for the 16-year-old Chism want the material dismissed as evidence, saying it was coerced

Lawyers for the Massachusetts teenager charged with raping and killing his math teacher have appealed a judge's decision to make public the video of the suspect's police interrogation.

The Salem News reports that Philip Chism's lawyers have asked a single justice of the Supreme Judicial Court to review last week's ruling that denied their motion to keep the audio and video of the questioning sealed.

Media organizations want the material released.

Lawyers for the 16-year-old Chism want the material dismissed as evidence, saying it was coerced.

Chism is charged with first-degree murder and rape in the October 2013 death of 24-year-old Colleen Ritzer, his math teacher at Danvers High School. Chism, 14 at the time, has pleaded not guilty.

There is no timetable for the SJC to hear the appeal.
