City residents will decide the fate of a proposed $650 million resort casino for the Brockton Fairgrounds in Massachusetts.

The southeastern Massachusetts city is holding a special election Tuesday on the proposal, which calls for a red brick casino complex housing a hotel, event space and restaurants.

Supporters say the project represents well-paid jobs and additional revenue for a city sorely needing them. Opponents complain city youth might suffer because the casino would be located next door to Brockton High School.

Voter approval is a critical step for the project to be considered for a state gambling license.

Developers of the Plainridge Park Casino, a planned slot parlor in nearby Plainville, meanwhile, showcased their nearly complete facility on Monday morning. The casino is slated to open June 24.
