1 Dead in Upton, Massachusetts, Fire

The fire remains under investigation

A man was killed in a 3-alarm structure fire in Upton, Massachusetts, on Thursday.

According to police, the fire broke out at 140 Main St. late Thursday morning. Main Street is expected to remain closed for the time being as the investigation continues.

Firefighters attempted to reach a trapped occupant on the first floor, but were unable to reach the person in time. No other residents had to be rescued from the building.

The name of the victim hasn't been released by officials. Neighbors describe him as a man in his 50s who lived alone in his first-floor apartment.

Tenants tell necn they tried to go back in for him, but couldn't because of difficult fire conditions, including thick, black smoke.

First crews in didn't report hearing any smoke detectors, fire officials said; however, a tenant told necn he heard fire alarms.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation. Officials are expecting to provide another update at 4 p.m.
