Power Outage Caused by Downed Wire Cancels School in Hopkinton, Mass.

Downed wires were reported in two New England towns Tuesday morning following a dusting of snow overnight and powerful wind gusts.

In Hopkinton, Massachusetts, crews responded to a downed tree that knocked down wires and power to the area. Officials closed Ash Street in both directions from the Doughboy Statue at the Hopkinton Town Common to 22 Ash St.

Massachusetts needs to work harder to help community college students land paid internships. That's the conclusion of a study by The Boston Foundation, which found the largest percentage of paid internships in Massachusetts goes to students from four-year colleges.

Authorities urged commuters to avoid the area while crews responded to the incident. As a result of the power outage, Hopkinton Public Schools canceled Tuesday classes.

As of 6:30 a.m., approximately 6,000 customers were without power Tuesday in Massachusetts. Most outages were reported in Hopkinton, Foxborough, Hamilton and Wenham.

By 5 p.m., power had been restored to all but 50 customers. Eversource crews were working to install a transformer.

Meanwhile, police in Manchester, New Hampshire warned residents to avoid Lake Shore Road south of Candia Road and north of Island Pond. The area was affected by downed live wires, according to officials. 

Eversource responded to the Manchester incident, as well.

Police in Methuen, Massachusetts, are blocking traffic on Maple Street by the Salem, New Hampshire border after a tree fell on a utility pole. Drivers are being asked to find alternative routes through the area.
