‘Beloved' Barber Struck by Police Cruiser in Quincy, Critically Injured

A 79-year-old man was in critical condition Wednesday after authorities say a police cruiser hit him as he was crossing a street in Quincy, Massachusetts.

Giovanni Angelucci of Braintree was rushed to the hospital Wednesday morning after authorities said the Quincy police cruiser hit him while he was crossing Independence Avenue near Goddard Street at 7:21 a.m.

The cruiser was responding to a medical call with its emergency lights activated, police said. The officer was also hospitalized and has been placed on temporary leave.

Angelucci — said to be a barber and well-known figue in the community — was taken to Boston Medical Center in critical condition.

Friends told NBC10 Boston Angelucci owns a shot in Qunicy Center and is "beloved" in the area.

"He's been a barber in Quincy for years and years," Rob Marchionne said. "He's just a sweet, sweet man and nobody deserves that. It's a tough situation."

The crash is under investigation by the Weymouth Police Crash Reconstruction Unit.
