FD: Ammunition ‘Went Off' During 3-Alarm Fire

An extensive amount of firearm ammunition "flared up" and "went off" when crews were fighting the flames

Firefighters encountered a serious challenge when battling a three-alarm blaze at a home in Worcester County in Massachusetts.

Fire Chief Brian Hickey tells the Telegram & Gazette that an extensive amount of firearm ammunition "flared up" and "went off" when crews were fighting the flames Thursday at a home on Upper Gore Road in Webster.

Officials say the fire, first reported around 3 p.m., started in a basement apartment.

Hickey says the bullets aren't like a projectile fired out of a gun when exposed to heat. Instead, he says, the boxes of ammunition popped off in different directions.

Crews were pulled out of the building until the ammunition was cooled down.

Homeowner James Lacky says he and his wife weren't home at the time of the blaze.
