Fire Destroys Mass. Home of 3 Refugee Families

Local and state fire officials are investigating a fire that burned the Massachusetts home of three refugee families, destroying nearly everything they own.

A total of 15 people, including nine children, were forced out of the multifamily home in Westfield on Friday. Two of the children were treated for smoke inhalation.

WWLP-TV reports that two of the families are refugees from Syria. One is from Iraq.

Mohammed Najeeb, who works for an agency that helped resettle the refugees, said the families arrived in 2014 and 2015. He said they had recently become self-sufficient but will now have to start over.

Westfield Fire Deputy Chief Eric Bishop said the fire is not considered suspicious.
