Slick Roads Cause Dozens of Crashes in Massachusetts, New Hampshire

Icy conditions made for dangerous roads across New England on Friday as a result of a wintry mix impacting the region.

According to the Boston Globe, more than 40 crashes were reported in Fitchburg, Massachusetts as a result of the icy roads. No one was seriously injured.

Police in Worcester responded to a single-vehicle crash involving a minivan on Zenith Drive. Photos of the scene show the front half of the minivan on top of a curb with its front side dented and a second vehicle with a loose rear bumper. Again, no injuries were immediately reported.

Crews also responded to an overturned utility truck in Worcester on Friday. 

Multiple firefighters responded to an overturned Devaney Energy truck on Morningside Road. No injuries were reported in this incident.

Accidents were also reported in Templeton, Berlin, Lancaster, Leominster and Shirley on Friday morning.

To the north in New Hampshire, a stretch of Interstate 89 north in Concord had to be shut down for over an hour after a series of motor vehicle crashes just before 7 a.m. as a result of icy roads.

Three passenger cars were involved in separate crashes, along with four tractor-trailer units which had jackknifed and crashed, blocking all lanes of traffic northbound between exits 2 and 3. A large box truck driving north also became involved in these crashes.

No one was injured, and no citations were issued to any of the drivers.

One of the tractor trailers spilled fuel, and the state Department of Environmental Services responded to assist in the cleanup.

State police also reported a jackknifed tractor-trailer in Milford and other vehicles sliding on Route 101.

Friday was deemed one of the coldest days of the month, with some temperatures in New England dipping below zero. Icy roads are expected to last into the afternoon toward the Vermont and New Hampshire borders.
