ACLU Files Suit Against Trump Administration on Behalf of RI Woman Held by Immigration

A Providence couple is at the center of a lawsuit filed by the ACLU of Massachusetts on their behalf against the Trump administration.

WJAR-TV reports Lilian Calderon, who emigrated to the United States from Guatemala at the age of 3, was held by immigration officials for almost a month after she and her husband voluntarily tried to verify their marriage so she could begin the process of becoming a U.S. citizen. Her husband, Luis Gordillo, already has U.S. citizenship.

Calderon was taken into custody during the January interview, with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officials citing child care issues as the reason for her detainment.

The ACLU said that it believes Calderon's detainment was both unlawful and unacceptable. Calderon and Gordillo said they want to help protect immigrants and keep families together after their ordeal.

Calderon was granted a temporary stay of deportation, which is set to expire in about a month, thanks to a previous lawsuit. Her status remains unclear at this time.
