A Springfield, Massachusetts, man whose best friend died when he crashed his car has been sentenced to 18 months in jail after pleading guilty to vehicular homicide.
The Republican newspaper reports that in a tearful court hearing Wednesday, Daquan Warrick was also sentenced to three years' probation in connection with October's crash.
Prosecutors say the 22-year-old Warrick was driving 60 to 70 miles per hour, or about 30 mph over the speed limit, when he lost control of his car near American International College. Warrick's passenger, Tayquan Goodman, was ejected and the car landed on top of him.
Police arrived to find bystanders trying to lift the car off Goodman.
Warrick apologized to Goodman's family in court. His lawyer asked that his entire sentence be suspended so he could attend college.
