24-year-old Alexander Hilton, of Princeton, was sentenced in Scotland in July after he pleaded guilty to assault by poisoning.

Prosecutors say Hilton spiked American student Robert Forbes' red wine with methanol at the University of St. Andrews in March 2011.

The student required dialysis and suffered permanent damage to his vision.

Hilton was extradited to Scotland in May. His lawyer has said that Hilton suffers from mental health issues. He has had past diagnoses of schizophrenia, delusional disorder and other illnesses.

Lord Burns of the High Court in Edinburgh called the poisoning a "wicked and deceitful act."
