Man Pleads Guilty to Stealing 6 Expensive Guitars

A Danvers, Massachusetts, man who says depression moved him to steal half a dozen guitars from a local music store even though he doesn't play the instrument has pleaded guilty.

A Salem District Court judge spared 38-year-old Christopher Eason jail time and sentenced him to a year of probation, after which a larceny charge will be dismissed if he complies with probationary conditions.

The Salem News reports that Eason told the judge he became depressed and withdrawn when his girlfriend left him and took their child.

Authorities say Eason stole six guitars worth a combined $20,000 from the Guitar Center in Danvers in six months. He was caught in April trying to steal a seventh worth $3,500.

He said he had no intention of reselling the instruments. All six were recovered.
