Gov. Charlie Baker Says Rent Control Is ‘Wrong Direction’: Report

The Boston Globe reports Baker said rent control would "stifle the production of new housing"

Massachusetts Gov. Charlie Baker reportedly thinks rent control would negatively affect the Bay State rather than help it.

The Boston Globe reports the Republican governor expressed his belief to reporters at an event in the Back Bay.

Rent control would "stifle the production of new housing," Baker reportedly said. "That's exactly the wrong direction we should go."

As legislative lawmakers work to implement such a bill, Baker suggests building more housing. He has been working on his own housing plan, which allows towns to change zoning rules for new developments through a majority vote, according to the Globe.

The vote would need to be approved by enough members of a municipal council or through a town meeting.
