Mass. Man Accused of Attacking Woman With Knife Remains in Jail

Joseph Dealmeida was ordered held without bond until a hearing on August 9th

A Massachusetts man remains in jail Thursday night, accused of attacking his neighbor's with a knife.

The attack happened just before noon Wednesday on Ridge Street in Arlington.

Investigators say another neighbor heard the woman’s screams, ran across the street, and pulled the suspect off the victim.

“It’s shocking,” Leigh Benowitz, who lives nearby, said Thurday.

According to court records, Joseph Dealmeida, 26, lives across the street and over one house from the victim.

Prosecutors allege Dealmeida followed the victim into her garage after she went to retrieve her garbage cans.

They add the suspect was armed with a knife. Another neighbor heard the woman’s screams and ran across the street to find the victim and the suspect struggling over the weapon. During the struggle the two fell on some stairs leading from the garage into the kitchen.

Investigators say that neighbor grabbed the knife out of Dealmeida’s hand, pulled him off the victim and held him until police arrived.

Dealmeida made his first court appearance Thursday. He was ordered held without bond until a dangerousness hearing on August 9th. The judge also ordered a mental evaluation.

“It is pretty scary to think that it was this close,” Benowitz said.
