Prosecutor: Reading, Massachusetts, Man Punched, Kicked Woman Over Text Messages

Still bloody from the crash that ended his time on the run, 30-year-old Brian English answered to a long list of charges in court on Monday.

According to prosecutors, English violently held his ex-girlfriend against her will, cornering her in the Reading, Massachusetts, home that he shares with his mother.

"The victim was allegedly begging his mother - the defendant's mother - to help her get out of the home," the prosecutor said.

Court documents show that English's ex-girlfriend went to the home willingly - despite her friends' concerns. When one of those friends began texting and calling her, English took her phone.

The victim told police that from then on, every time her phone rang she was punched or kicked. The beating allegedly continued until morning when she was eventually able to get away.

Late that night, after an extensive manhunt, English was arrested when he crashed his SUV. Police believe he was high on drugs and driving recklessly.

He now faces 10 charges, from kidnapping to failing to stop for police. This isn't the first time he has had a run-in with the law. He has a lengthy criminal history, with dozens of different cases, including assault and battery and drug charges.

He was ordered held without bail Monday in Woburn District Court pending a dangerousness hearing on April 4.
