On May 29, 83-year-old Daniele Pepe, of East Boston, sustained serious injuries while he walked in the reservation

Massachusetts State Police are stepping up patrols after two alleged assaults that occurred at the Belle Isle Marsh Reservation on the Revere - East Boston line.

One of the assaults resulted in a fatality.

On May 29, 83-year-old Daniele Pepe, of East Boston, sustained serious injuries while he walked in the reservation. Pepe was transported to Massachusetts General Hospital, where he later died from his injuries on June 1.

"He didn't bother no one, who ever would want to do something like this to an 83 year old guy, I couldn't believe it when I heard it," said his brother in law Tony Dicicco.

"He didn't bother no one, who ever would want to do something like this to an 83 year old guy, I couldn't believe it when I heard it," said his brother-in-law, Tony Dicicco.

His injuries were serious, and as a result, Pepe was unable to provide a description of what happened.

Police are investigating the causes of the injuries.

In a second incident, a man suffered injuries from an assault in the marsh. Both men were attacked in the approximate same place, at the same time - just before three in the afternoon.

Police are investigating this incident as well and determining whether this case could be linked to the previous assault.

The victim from the second incident described the assailant as a male in his late 20s or 30s, approximately 5'9" in height. He also described the assailant as wearing a hat, t-shirt and shorts, all beige or brown in color.

Anyone who may have more information regarding either incident are asked to call State Trooper Joel Balducci at 617-727-8817, extension 5670.

Pepe was laid to rest Tuesday morning.
