Massachusetts Tops Ranking of States With Best Public School Systems

Massachusetts, Connecticut, Vermont and New Hampshire were among the top 10 states with the best pubic schools in the U.S.

Massachusetts has the best public schools in the nation, and three other New England states ranked in the top 10, according to a list compiled by WalletHub.

The Bay State edged out New Jersey in the study that ranked states by taking into account the funding, safety, class size and overall performance of public schools.

Connecticut ranked third on the list, while Vermont and New Hampshire came in fifth and seventh, respectively.

Massachusetts led the nation when it came to math and reading test scores. It also had the lowest percentage of threatened and injured high school students, WalletHub said. Massachusetts was also noted for having one of the lowest bullying rates.

Connecticut, meanwhile, ranked highest in the country when it came to median ACT score. It also ranked fourth in reading test scores.

Vermont had the best pupil-to-teacher ratio in the nation, and also had strong marks in reading tests scores. It had the third-lowest rate of threatened or injured high school students.

New Hampshire scored well when it came to reading test scores and median ACT score. The Granite State was also said to be one of the states with the lowest pupil-to teacher-ratio.
