A Massachusetts man has produced an acclaimed documentary about his life with ALS.
Patrick O'Brien was a budding filmmaker and DJ when he was diagnosed with the degenerative nerve condition in 2005.
But rather than let the disease defeat him, he turned the cameras on himself.
Over roughly a decade, the cameras capture him losing control of his legs and arms, using a feeding tube and later being placed on a ventilator.
No longer able to speak or move, O'Brien finished the film using a computer system that detects his eye movements so he can type out words on a screen.
"TransFatty Lives" won the audience award at the Tribeca and Milano film festivals last year. The film has its Boston-area premiere on Sunday.
