Mass. School Renamed to Honor Man Fatally Injured in Afghanistan

The school re-opened for classes last month after a $39 million renovation.

Charlie Baker and other officials have rededicated a western Massachusetts school to honor a National Guardsman fatally injured in Afghanistan.

The Springfield Republican reports the former Chicopee High School, now a middle school, was renamed on Saturday for 1st Sgt. Kevin Dupont. Dupont, who died in 2009, graduated from Chicopee High School in 1976.

Baker said he hopes the new name "will teach and inspire our next generation to learn from his courage, strength, and selflessness."

Dupont served in the Marine Corps. He then joined the Army National Guard and was working for the military's counter-drug program. He volunteered for Afghanistan, where he was hit by an improvised explosive and died several months later. He lived in Templeton with his wife.
