Murder Suspects Ask Judge for Separate Trials

Travis Perkins and Brian Slater face murder charges in connection with the July 2014 death of Jermaine Cowell, found shot in the street near his home

Lawyers for two men charged in connection with a fatal shooting in Springfield, Massachusetts, nearly two years ago are asking for separate trials.

Travis Perkins and Brian Slater face murder charges in connection with the July 2014 death of Jermaine Cowell, found shot in the street near his home.

Their lawyers told a Hampden Superior Court judge this week that Slater's plan at trial is to point the finger at Perkins.

The Republican newspaper reports that Slater's attorney says there's no evidence his client knew Perkins had a gun and intended to kill the victim and there is no evidence Slater aided Perkins in any way.

Perkins has denied the charges.

Prosecutors say the defendants were engaged in a joint venture.

The judge did not immediately rule.
