Police Hunt Murder Suspect Who Escaped After Standoff

Authorities responded to a murder scene inside a New Bedford, Massachusetts, house where they believed the suspect was held up inside, but got away, according to a NBC affiliate WJAR report.

There was an intense police presence at Matthew and Bank streets on Wednesday afternoon after officers responded to a nearby home for a report of a disturbance and shots fired.

Officers allegedly found the victim suffering from a gunshot wound, and he was pronounced dead at St. Luke's Hospital. The victim has not been named.

Police said they identified a person of interest, who they thought was holed up inside the house during a standoff. They later determined he got away.

"We did not locate anyone in that residence, so the suspect is still at large," police told WJAR.

Police said the suspect is a man and should be considered armed and dangerous.

"The investigation, as you all know, is very, very active at this point," authorities said. "And we're following several leads to try to locate this suspect."
