One of the holiday's hottest presents is now considered contraband at many colleges across New England.
At least 20 colleges and universities across the country have banned or restricted hoverboards on their campuses in recent weeks, with Emerson College in Boston and Quinnipiac University in Connecticut joining the list on Thursday.
Beyond the risk of falls and collisions, colleges are citing warnings from federal authorities that some of the self-balancing gadgets have caught on fire.
This week, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission reported that it's now investigating 28 fires in 19 states tied to the motorized scooters.
Other school officials, including the University of Connecticut say they're reviewing the issue and will have a decision for their respective campus communities in the coming weeks.
