Newly-Renovated MBTA Station Springs a Leak

MBTA General Manager Frank DePaola released a statement saying crews think snow accumulated in a two-foot excavation ditch

The newly-renovated Government Center MBTA station has been open for a little more than two weeks and has apparently already sprung a leak.

Buckets were put out to catch water coming from the ceiling.

MBTA General Manager Frank DePaola released a statement saying crews think snow accumulated in a two-foot excavation ditch which was dug above the station for work to install sidewalks and street lights.

That apparently allowed the water to seep down to an unused on-public tunnel and then into the area over the Blue Line platform.

Waterproofing sealant will be installed and MBTA officials will keep an eye on the situation.

DePaola added that waterproofing might need to happen again in the future because the Government Center's 100-year-old tunnel walls and roof are still in place.

The two-year renovation of the Government Center stop cost an estimated $88 million.
