Officer Shoots, Injures Man Wielding Knife at Chicopee Home

Dauda Handan, 55, is facing assault and battery charges

A Massachusetts police officer has shot and injured a possibly suicidal man who refused to drop a knife he was holding.

A spokesman for the Hampden district attorney says Chicopee police responded to an apartment at about 1 a.m. Wednesday for a well-being check after a caller said he was receiving disturbing messages from a co-worker he believed to be suicidal.

Officers found Dauda Handan, 55, holding a large kitchen knife in a threatening manner.

Authorities say he refused to drop it, so police used a stun gun, which failed to subdue him. The second officer fired twice, striking Handan in the abdomen and arm. He was taken to the hospital and is expected to recover.

Handan faces assault and battery charges. The officer has been placed on leave pending an investigation.
