Officer Responds to Hit-and-Run Crash to Find Family Inside Vehicle

An off-duty police officer in Barnstable, Massachusetts, responded to a hit-and-run crash Tuesday night, just to find it was his family that was inside the car which was struck.

The crash happened around 8 p.m. at the intersection of Old Stage Road and Thoreau Drive, according to Barnstable Police.

Two vehicles were involved, including a rental.

The driver of the rental fled and was later arrested. He was identified as Matthew Cuccia, 38, of Centerville.

The occupants of the other vehicle were a mother, and her three children, 7, 10 and 12. The officer's 10-year-old daughter was taken to a hospial for a non-life-threatening head injury.

Cuccia has been charged with OUI, operating to endanger, leaving the scene of a personal injury and a marked lanes violation.

It was not immediately known if he has a lawyer.
