Police: Pedestrian Hit by Stolen Jeep

A pedestrian was seriously injured Friday in Somerville, Massachusetts, after being struck by an SUV police believe was stolen from a home in Melrose.

State police ran the license plate of the 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee after spotting it around 3:30 p.m. Friday on Mysic Avenue. Once officers confirmed the vehicle was stolen, police said they began to approach it, prompting the driver to speed off.

According to authorities, the fleeing vehicle went off-road and hit a man walking in the median near the intersection of Lombardi Way and Broadway. The victim, a 26-year-old Somerville man, was taken to Massachusetts General Hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries. His identity is not being released.

Police said the driver, Arthur L. Woods IV, 18, of Arlington, and his passenger, Elvira C. Sanchez, 19, Malden, were both arrested after a brief foot chase. Investigators said they later discovered Woods was in possession of narcotics.

Woods and Sanchez will be charged with receiving a stolen motor vehicle and disorderly conduct. Woods will also face additional charges, including drug possession with intent to distribute, leaving the scene of a crash that caused personal injury and property damage and failure to stop for police.

Sanchez was also arrested on two outstanding warrants.

So far, no bail is set, and the two remain held at State Police barracks in Medford. Both will be arraigned in Somerville District Court next week.
