A Springfield, Massachusetts, police dog has died in a tragic accident near his home in Palmer.
The 3-year-old K-9, Grom, was running a trail for exercise around 1 p.m. Friday when he struck a sharp branch from a downed tree. The impact killed him instantly, according to police.
Officers from Connecticut, Berkshire County, and Wilbraham gathered in Palmer upon the news of Grom's death. They assisted in a police escort of Grom's remains with lights and sirens on as a final tribute.
Grom and Officer Maciej Jasinski had been partners for the past two years. Police say he was an outstanding "tracker" and assisted in many illegal drug arrests. In addition, Grom helped with demonstrations at many Springfield schools and was loved by all the students.
