Chief: No Connection Between 2 Fires That Sparked Just Hours Apart in Southbridge, Mass.

The first fire sparked near Main and Central Streets Sunday afternoon

Fire officials say two fires that sparked within hours of each other in Southbridge, Massachusetts, are not connected.

The first fire sparked near Main and Central Streets Sunday afternoon.

A few hours later another blaze started at a home on Benefit Street.

The second fire displaced 8-to-10 families, but was quickly put out.

The first fire, however, was an hours-long battle for firefighters that reached six alarms.

The building housed more than half-a-dozen businesses and the top two floors served as a rooming house.

Crews said the nature of the building made it difficult to put out flames.

One firefighter was taken to a hospital, but he's expected to be alright.

Authorities believe the first fire is suspicious, but at this point, there's no word on a cause just yet.

Officials believe the first fire may have been arson, but the cause of both fires remain under investigation.
