Supportive Golden Retriever Ready to Motivate Boston Marathon Participants

Spencer the Golden Retriever was at the Boston Marathon route last year to support runners

About 1 million people are expected to attend the 123rd Boston Marathon on Monday, and among the crowd will be one friendly face and wagging tail that aims to motivate the athletes.

"Spencer" the dog will be donning a bright, yellow raincoat and holding a "We Are Boston Strong" flag in his mouth as his way of cheering on the participants in Hopkinton.

Last year, the supportive pooch was seen in a viral video carrying two flags in his mouth while athletes ran by him. Through the cheering crowd, one woman could be heard yelling, "I love him!" to the dog.

Spencer’s owner, Rich Powers, said he and the pup will return to the route this year. Although wet weather kicked off Marathon Monday, Powers said it is much better than last year’s conditions.
