Apartment Building Roof Collapses, Displacing 100 Springfield Residents

About a 100 people were displaced when the roof of their apartment building in Massachusetts partially collapsed during a heavy thunderstorm.

The Springfield Fire Department responded to the 26-unit building at about 8:45 p.m. Monday.

Spokesman Dennis Leger says the three-story building has a flat roof and the drains clogged. The weight of the water caused a roof seam to break and sent water cascading through the building all the way to the basement. No injuries were reported.

The city's code enforcement division condemned the building and cut the power.

The landlord and Red Cross were working in finding the residents temporary shelter.

It's unclear when residents will be allowed to return.
