Suspect in Murder of 18-Year-Old West Springfield, Mass. Woman Held Without Bail

A Massachusetts man charged with shooting an 18-year-old woman in the head and then trying to flee to Puerto Rico has been held without bail.

A not guilty plea to a charge of murder was entered on behalf of 19-year-old Roberto Santiago at his arraignment Wednesday in Springfield District Court. His attorney did not argue for bail.

Prosecutors say Santiago shot 18-year-old Delilah Santiago in a West Springfield apartment on Monday afternoon.

He was captured later Monday at Bradley International Airport in Connecticut with a ticket to Puerto Rico.

Authorities say although the suspect and victim apparently knew each other, they are not related.

The death was the city's first homicide of the year.
