Suspect Injured After Shooting at Police Officer

Police officer involved shooting took place early Wednesday in Lowell, Mass.

A suspect is being treated for injuries after firing multiple rounds at a Lowell, Massachusetts, police officer early Wednesday.

The suspect was stopped on Middlesex Street for motor vehicle violations. The suspect then exited the vehicle and began firing shots with a handgun. 

The officer returned fire, and was not struck.

The suspect was identified as Darris Newton, 23, of Lowell. He is charged with armed assault with intent to murder, unlawful carrying of a firearm, unlawful carrying of a loaded firearm, unlawful discharge of a firearm within 500 feet of a dwelling, operating a motor vehicle with defective equipment, and a red light violation.

Newton is scheduled to be arraigned from his hospital bed Wednesday afternoon.

The investigation is ongoing.
