Tewksbury Considering Repealing Plastic Bag Ban

Tewksbury is one of the more than 80 towns in Massachusetts to have passed a plastic bag ban, but the community will meet on Monday to discuss the possibility of repealing the year-old bill.

A plastic bag ban aimed to reduce the use of plastic in order to help the environment passed in dozens of Bay State communities last year. The ban replaces plastic bags with paper ones at grocery stores.

While some residents say the ban is environmentally friendly and helps human health, opponents say it is ineffective at combating litter and makes shopping for elderly people difficult.

Several stores charge 10 cents per paper bag used and environmentalists say this encourages shoppers to buy reusable bags.

A legislative panel in Massachusetts has considered implementing a statewide single-use plastic bag ban.
