The jury in the penalty phase of Dzhokhar Tsarnaev's murder trial was shown written notes Wednesday from a notebook page and a composition notebook found in the Tsarnaev family's apartment. It isn't clear who is responsible for the writings, but Tamerlan Tsarnaev's daughter's name is written four times on the last page of the notebook.
Below are excerpts from the handwritten notes:
- "fight them & Allah will punish them with your hands"
- "If Allah supports you then no one can overcome you"
- "without Allah you have no guardian and no helper"
- "Muslims...are like one body"
- "they will fight on their way to Allah and do not fear condemnation"
- "reasonable people would never dare do something like this"
- "I am fighting so hard because my heart is burning up in flames"
- "The one who endures the blows of the sword will be glorified & his work will be rewarded"
- "and we will most certainly test you & find out who among you will fight & endure"
- "Someday I want to stand before the One for whom I fought so much"
- "once (proper name) begins jihad, his motto: victory or heaven"
- "Allah says don't be afraid that they will win over you, fear only me"
- "We will inspire fear in the hearts of those who do not believe"
- "you can overcome this whole world by yourself"
- "Oh Allah, free us completely from our attachment to life on earth"
- "He is Allah, the one and only Allah"
