Whale Expert to Speak at New England Aquarium

A prominent marine mammal scientist is speaking at the New England Aquarium to explain why saving the endangered North Atlantic right whale is important for the health of the ocean.

Scott Kraus' lecture Tuesday presented by Women Working for Oceans at the aquarium's IMAX Theatre in Boston is entitled "On the Brink: Saving Our Right Whale, Saving Our Ocean."

Kraus, vice president and senior adviser-chief scientist for Marine Mammal Conservation at the New England Aquarium, played a crucial mediating role in helping develop strategies to decrease entanglement mortalities of right and humpback whales.

This year, a consensus was reached that will reduce risk of entanglement by 60%.

Scientists think there are only a little more than 400 North Atlantic right whales left.

The lecture is free, but pre-registration is required.
