Woman Steals More Than $45K From Dead Mom's Social Security

Shirley Warner of Haydenville pleaded guilty Monday

A western Massachusetts woman has admitted to stealing more than $45,000 of her dead mother's Social Security benefits.

U.S. Attorney Carmen Ortiz's office says 52-year-old Shirley Warner of Haydenville pleaded guilty Monday in Springfield to theft of public money.

WWLP reports Ortiz's office says Warner's mother died in July 2010, but Warner kept collecting her monthly Social Security benefits from August 2010 to March 2014.

Prosecutors say the money was deposited into a joint bank account in Warner and her mother's names.

Warner faces 10 years in prison, three years of supervised release and a $250,000 fine when she's sentenced June 20.
