Mid-Week Winter Storm Will Bring a One-Two Punch to New England

A storm developing in the southern Plains will move into the Great Lakes on Thursday and will push snow, freezing rain, heavy rain and thunderstorms into New England.

One important note, we will be on the "warm" side of the track for most of the storm, but at the beginning, there will be enough cold air in place to start off as snow, then freezing rain and eventually turning to all rain gradually on Wednesday.

The first piece of the storm arrives late Tuesday afternoon in the form of snow to Connecticut and Rhode Island. The snow will spread north towards Boston/Worcester Tuesday evening before transitioning to freezing rain. A couple of inches of snow are possible before making the transition. Temperatures are likely to remain below freezing into Wednesday for many interior areas like Worcester county, Hampden, Hampshire counties and southern areas of Vermont and New Hampshire.

The Wednesday morning commute may be slippery and dangerous in these areas. There is a Winter Weather Advisory in effect for western and central Massachusetts from 4 p.m. Tuesday to noon on Wednesday due to the possibility of icy conditions. Temperatures will steadily rise on Wednesday but it could take until late Wednesday afternoon before all interior zones get above the freezing point.

The second part of this system will bring periods of rain throughout our Wednesday and heavy rain Wednesday night into Thursday morning. As a matter fact, there is enough instability for a few embedded thunderstorms Thursday morning along with strong winds.

Windswept rain on Thursday morning will make the commute challenging and gusty south winds could also cause pockets of power outages. One to 2 inches of rain are possible with some localized higher amounts, which means localized street and poor drainage flooding are also a concern. The bulk of the rain is offshore by Thursday evening but there will be some lingering showers through Friday morning. A quieter, cooler weekend will follow.
