Going on 60 hours after the Blizzard of 2015 began pummeling Nantucket, dozens of power crews were working Wednesday night to complete the restoration of power to an island that had gone almost 100 percent black at the storm's height.
The blizzard has left a gorgeous frosting of snow all over trees and storefronts in the quaint village center, but has also imposed serious hardships on hundreds of residents.
"It's been hell," said Renee Cely, who had had no power for 48 hours and was evacuating with her husband to Boston on the ferry to stay safe.
Nantucket got about a foot of snow in most areas, but experienced winds over 50 mph for nearly 24 straight hours, which created massive snowdrifts and power failures.
Shortly before 9 p.m., utility National Grid said that fewer than 1,000 homes and businesses on the island were without power, about 8 percent of the island. National Grid hoped to have almost everyone back connected to the grid between midnight and noon Thursday.
